What a way to run a rodeo

  • Win (2nd)
  • Sheet 2 (R)
  • Blue Rocks

The blue rocks thing is becoming kind of a joke.

First couple of ends, felt like we were playing just fine and maybe even slightly better than the other team, but just couldn't really put an end together. So down 2-0 going into the third end. Then the other team really just ran out of gas, and boom we had a 6-ender, followed by a steal of 2-4 that wasn't actually counted because they just shook hands at that point.

For the roughly one human being who I think might be reading these, the (R) and (N) next to the "Sheet N" up above signifies that I'm talking about different clubs, while trying weirdly to remain some anonymity to all of this. All that to say that, this is my long time team moving to a new club, and it's interesting to just experience a different vibe.

I've played at many different clubs in bonspiels, where you are visiting but also almost all the other teams are also visiting, and it's all just an excuse for middle aged people to party and pretend like we're still cool kids. Whereas now I'm like, a club regular, at a new club. Vibes are different.

My "old" club (that I still play at twice a week in my other games) is often described as a "social" club. I kind of always took that to mean something like, "We're not all that competitive, we're a more casual club." But since we are a new team in this particular league at the new club, we start at the bottom of the ladder, which so far is not very competitive at all (not that there's anything wrong with that.) But like, it's not very social?

Game one, nobody showed up and we win by forfeit. Game two, everybody left after the game with some excuse or another, and our team sat and drank alone. This game, only the skip hung around, and we left at what I would call a perfectly "normal" time at our old club but at this club we were closing the bar out.

So yeah, just not quite as social as I'm used to.

Notes

  • Since I throw second on this team, I'm really not focused so much on the curl of the ice
  • On the other hand, I'm hyper focused on judging weight as a sweeper, and so far between my two real games here: starts slow, gets quick real soon, but then gets fudgy as all hell by end 4
